COMPARING PHOTOS

Two photographs of the same place. But obviously they are not alike. What would you say about them?

Here's an example, made up of two different comments of yours:

The pictures are very similar, they both show a city and it looks as if it is the same city but with a big difference, the pictures were taken in a different time, the first one nowadays while the second one may be from the late XIX century.

Because of that principal difference we can observe a lot more differences. The first picture is in colour and we can see that the city has a road for cars and a sidewalk for people walking. We can also notice that the picture was taken on a sunny day.

In the second picture we see an old city where there is a sidewalk and a "road" for carriages. As the people are walking with umbrellas we can tell that it was a rainy day. (Irene)

In picture A, people seem more nervous because life nowadays is more stressful, but in picture B it seems that people are more relaxed, as if they had no pressure for anything.

I think I'd raher live in picture A because I prefer life as it is nowadays. (Andrea)

  1. These photos are alike because they both show the same place. As we can see in the picture, in this square, people are walking and on the background there are some buildings.

The first picture has lots of colours whereas the other hasn't got any colour apart from black and white. Another difference is the weather, the colourful picture shows a sunny day while the old one shows a bad day. All people have got their umbrella. In the modern picture we can see cars while in the other one there are only a couple of carriages that are older than cars.
You can tell that the life in the second photo is worse than in the first one. Personally, I prefer staying in the first picture because I hate rainy days. The past is past and I'm in the present, so I'd rather to be in the present.

The pictures are alike because they both show cities.
Picture A shows a city from about a hundred years ago, while picture B shows a modern city.
Another difference is that in the city of the picture A,it's raining, but in the picture B the sun has risen.
In picture B,there are more people.
I think I would have liked to live in the time of the picture B,because there was less pollution

  3. The pictures are alike because they both show the same place. Both photos have been taken at the same time, I mean, at the same hour but obviously not at the same age, because it seems to be midday in both of them. Nobody is posing for the camera in any of the photographs.

In the first picture we can see a modern population while we can´t see that in the second one. Another difference is that in the first photo the sun is shining while in the second one it is raining, the weather is not the same. There is a difference in the colour too, the first one is really colourful while the second one has only two colours. In the first picture we can see cars while in the other one we can see carriages.

You can tell that in the second picture they lived without stress. Nowadays we are very worried about all, and that is why I would rather be in the second picture, in the past. Personally I prefer being less worried.

  4. Both pictures are alike because they show two big cities.
One of the differences is the time in which the pictures were taken: the first one is newer than the second one, which is in black & white.
Another difference is the people in the street. In the second picture people are holding an umbrella, so I suppose it's rainning, while in the first picture it seems to be a nice day. That's supposed to be why in the second picture people look like more stressed, while in the first one people look more confortable.
I'd rather to be in the first picture place because it's a nicer day!!

  5. I will compare the previous pictures.
Boht show a similar landscape, it seems a city and dare I to say they are the same city.
The difference is that the first picture seems to be more modern than the second.
I know it because in the first picture we can see the different colors while the second one is in black and white.
Moreover, while in the first picture we can see many cars, in the second one there aren"t any car but there are some carriages.

In both pictures we can see similar buildings and a lot of people in the streets.
In the first one we notice it is in the daytime and in the second one also it seems to be it due to the clarity of the sky and due to there are many people in the streets.
In the second one it is raining while in the first picture it is sunny.

In my opinion, I would prefer to be in the second one because I have been many times in cities similar to the first picture but I have never been in a city like the second picture and I would like it.

  6. The Pictures are alike because they both show the same place where there are different people.

In the photoghaph two the people wearing old-fashioned clothes and everyone looks quite uncomfortable beause the colours clothes is dark, while in the photograph one the people wearing different colours clothes and happy colours.
In one hand I dont rather live in a hundred years ago because the life was most difficult and there arent the comforts that we have nowadays.

In the fisrt picture the place seems to be more funny, and more active, but also more stressful. However, the second one seems to be more bored, calm, and peaceful.

  32. Here are some corrections. Read them because they may be of interest for you all.

Cristina: streetlights; in picture B (NOT "in a picture B"); because we can see.
"...in picture one there aren't any cars..."

Marina: They are both alike; The first picture shows the square nowadays (NOT "in nowadays").

Tamara. I've had to suppress your comment, because of the inappropriate link. This is what you wrote:

The two pictures shows the same place, but obviously they are not alike. The first picture shows a sunny day in the summer and people are wearing vests of short sleeves because it is hot while the people in the second picture are wearing winter clothes because the day is cloudy and rainy. The picture one shows cars as a means of transport whereas in the picture two the persons in cars of horses.
In conclusion, the picture two is in black and white while the picture one is a colours so the picture one seems more modern than picture two.

Ana Belén: I'd rather walk (NOT "walking")

Blanca: use "traffic lights" instead of "semaphores".

Carlos: (2BC?) Too short! What about your preferences, your speculations abot what people are doing, etc.?

Pablo: while in picture B it is raining. Too short!

Andrea: Good! I think I'd rather live in picture A.

Miriam: photograph, NOT photography; "Puerta del Sol", NOT "sun place" (PROPER NOUNS AND PLACE NAMES ARE NOT USUALLY TRANSLATED)

    Emilio: in these two photographs

María: people are; there are no engined cars

Natalia: Do not invent words (circuling, adverd); do not use Spanglish (the people is triste)

Juan Carlos: A bit simple, I'm afraid, and too short!

Lorena: Good. You've made an effort to improve your vocabulary: paving stones, streetcars, etc.

Laura: the center of a very crowded city (ADJECTIVES BEFORE NOUNS)

Antonio: This means that it was raining

    Jesús: Maybe it was raining.

Irene: use "present" instead of "actual" (FALSE FRIENDS); people are...

    Rocío: People are...

    Thank you.

  38. This two pictures show the same city, but from the image colour and quality we can tell they were taken in very different times. The first one is new, taken probably in the 21st century. The second one is in black and white, so we know it was probably taken before the mid 60s, when the Polaroid camera made colour photography mainstream.

Besides from the image colour, there are more signs to date the image. The cars we see are actually horsedrawn carriages, what takes us to the 19th century. Curiously, the umbrellas we see people using in the picture are closer to modern umbrellas than to the classic women's "parasol" of the time.

What is shocking about this pair of pictures is that the buildings have remained mostly unchanged. One of the very few differences is a huge wine company billboard at the top of the building on the right, which perfectly suits our consumist century.

Also, we can in the old picture see almost no distinction between the street and the sidewalk. Children are playing football on the street, alongside with the cars. I guess that can be attributed to the slow speed of cars at that time, because if a child would play in the street nowdays, he would probably get killed.

Another difference is the height of the lampposts. They're almost three times as tall in the new picture! They also work on electricity in the new picture, while on oil on the old one. Probably, that is what tripled the sizes: electricity makes them shine brighter, so they can be placed higher and cover a bigger area. Also, there is no need for a man to go around lighting them at night(it would be really difficult for him to do so if they were 6 meters tall!)

In the old picture I can apreciatee a small street lights and I think that it is curious.
Now it´s typical to see street lights biger than the other street lights.
in the first the weather is sunny but in the other picture the weather is rainy and they were going umbrellas.
I also see a big billboard on the new built about the wine but in the other there was old builts.
in my opinion i prefer the old picture , i really like the carriage because the cars and motorbike there are more pollutant than the carriage and horse.
other observations is the clothes, normally before the people there were wearing suits and voluptuous dress but now the people in the other picture there are wearing modren clothes It is funny to see how people from other ages used to wear strange clothes.
